Wright's Cambridge Reaction
After scoring a last-ditch winner on Tuesday night against Shrewsbury Town, Callum Wright scored Argyle’s opener en route to the Greens beating Cambridge United 3-1 at Home Park on Saturday.
Although the visitors equalised via Sam Smith, second-half goals by Joe Edwards and Niall Ennis secured the win for Argyle.
Edwards was also making it two in two on the goal front, with the captain nabbing his first of the season at Shrewsbury before quickly doubling his tally.
Wright’s goal had come from a throughball from Ryan Hardie, but Callum still had plenty to do, taking the ball away from a defender with his first touch, and finishing with a second.
“It was a great pass,” Callum told Argyle TV. “I still had to beat the defender with a little bit, but it was a great set and I’m glad to have finished it.
“It's not a bad feeling – but three points is the main thing, and it's back-to-back now.
“I didn’t know he hadn’t scored all season, and now he steps up with two in two! That's what big players do for you. It got us going again, and all credit to him.”
Argyle had only scored the game’s opening goal in one of their previous five fixtures, but Wright’s goal, in the 15th minute, set a tone to the game that was echoed in the stands. The Green Army, already loud, were lifted by the goal, and continued to back the team throughout.
With two more sold-out home games this week – against Bristol Rovers and Burton Albion – the supporters’ backing will be crucial, in an amazing promotion race that still involves Ipswich Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley, as well as table-topping Argyle.
“It's important that [we don’t let] the fans get frustrated,” said Callum. “Teams are going to come here and try to upset us, so it’s important the fans get behind us, which I thought they did all game today, even when it went 1-1. It’s important we keep it up, get them off their feet and if we need a little bit of help, they can get us off our feet.
“We’ve got a good home record and to start this week off this way is massive. Recently teams have been coming here and parking the bus and we’ve been struggling to break through them early doors. A goal straight away makes them come out of their shape and all of a sudden it’s a different game.
“It’s going to be some race. It’s a credit to the other teams – and us – that everyone’s pushing each other. We just have to keep winning our games. Three to go – it’s going to be exciting, isn’t it?”
