Whittaker's Ipswich Reaction
Morgan Whittaker is quietly emerging as a more and more influential figure in an Argyle side whose confidence levels are starting to redefine the word ‘brimming’.
The Swansea loan forward’s appearances have transitioned from being described as ‘cameos’, through the ‘impact sub’ territory, to the point where he started the game against league leaders Ipswich Town and was named as sponsors’ man of the match.
Former league leaders Ipswich, that is. Argyle’s 2-1 win, in which Morgan scored the winning goal, propelled the Pilgrims to the summit of Sky Bet League One in Town’s stead, but the game was a super contest between two very good sides, shown live on Sky Sports.
For Morgan, still just 21, his career is still burgeoning, but his strike at the Devonport End, with just over 15 minutes of the game remaining, which sent Home Park into raptures, has positioned itself as a leading memory already.
“It’s right up there,” he told Argyle TV. “The occasion, being top of the league and being on telly, it’s been perfect.
“I got it, and the defender came to me, so it made me hit it early. Luckily, it’s gone in the top corner. I can’t ask for more.
“I ran to the fans, and then had to protect myself as everyone was jumping on!”=
The win was another come-from-behind performance from Argyle, who recently won 3-2 at Derby County from being 2-0 down, a game in which Morgan scored. Last weekend, The Pilgrims nearly bagged three points from being a goal down only for Portsmouth to nab a late equalising goal.
It is notable that the ten games that Argyle have had, tallying 22 points, have been against many teams expected to be in the higher echelons of the division after four times as many games have been played.
Everyone knows it is still very early days, but Morgan’s – and the squad’s – message is that we can all enjoy the moment.
He said: “We were 1-0 down at half-time, and the message was to stick to our game plan and get the next goal, because we know what can happen. It says a lot about our character; we’ll never lie down.
“It’s the best time to play the top teams, at the minute, the way we are going. The team spirit is high, as you would imagine. We’re just taking in the moment of being top of the league.”
