West Bromwich Albion (A) | Gibson's Reaction
Saturday’s 0-0 draw at West Bromwich album was doubly pleasing for defender Lewis Gibson.
The 23-year-old centre-back was at heart of a strong performance by Argyle, gained a point at the Hawthorns, during a game in which they had the better chances to win it.
On a personal level, Gibson returned to the side, four weeks after his previous run-out. Such an absence suggests a month’s worth of injury, but as he explained after the game speaking to Argyle TV, three games in a week following a two-week international window played their part in Gibson’s absence and recovery respectively.
“It was only really a week or so, but I managed to miss three games, unfortunately,” he said.
“It's been tough. No-one wants to get injured for a period of time. I'm not a great watcher – I’m a nailbiter and on the edge of my seat. I want to get out there and just help.
“Sometimes it's just about timing. For me, [the international break] gave me that extra week just to let things settle down and to be back for this one.”
It also gave manager Steven Schumacher a chance to reset a little, and his message to the squad was one of reflection, on what his side had done well and indeed not so well in the opening 11 games of the campaign.
The reaction was a good one, with the 0-0 draw at West Brom featuring some exciting attacking play, a first half in which the Greens were on top, and then a second half in which their organisation and determination came to the fore.
“It was a clean sheet and a point away from home so it couldn't have gone much better. Obviously, I would like the three points, but sometimes you've got to be humble and take the point.
“I think in the first half we were probably the better team, played some really good football and created a few chances, which we were unlucky not to take.
“I thought the whole team were brilliant, read the switches really well and were compact. We didn't get played through and were hard to beat. I think that's a real improvement from where we've been.
“We came back from the international break, sat down on Monday and had a meeting of how the season's going, where we can improve, where we've been doing really well. I think we took the points on board. It was a really mature performance today.”
