Under-18s Report | Luton Town 1 Argyle 3
Argyle Under-18s won their second game in succession in Merit League One on Tuesday, beating Luton Town 3-1 on the road.
In qualifying for the Merit League, Plymouth won their regional conference of the Youth Alliance League, but while the young Pilgrims were doing so, Luton were winning the equivalent division in their region.
It was the Greens who proved supremacy in this particular fixture, though, scoring twice in the first half through defender Joel Sullivan. His first goal saw him following up a Tegan Finn shot to knock home the rebound, and his second was a conversion of a set play, delivered by Cole Fisher after Freddie Issaka had been brought down.
Argyle missed a penalty after the break, Caleb Roberts hitting the crossbar from 12 yards, but only a few minutes later added to their tally, when Finn’s corner found its way into the net after not being dealt with by Luton at the back.
The Hatters recorded a consolation goal, but Plymouth were in control, and saw the game out.
“We started the game off strongly, on the front foot,” said Under-18s manager Jamie Lowry. “We took the game to Luton, caused problems and probably should have been further ahead than we were at half-time. We were very strong.
“They made some changes and had a go in the second half, but we dealt well with that early pressure and saw the game through well.
“We’ve spoken with the lads about our desire to follow up the Youth Alliance League win, and to give it a real go to win this league too. It may have taken a couple of games to get going again, but to beat Stevenage on Thursday and then Luton on Tuesday, it gives us some nice momentum.
“To Luton, we were up very early in the morning, and back in a day. The boys were brilliant though, dealt with it really well, and had the bit between their teeth. I was really pleased.”
