Under-18s at Babcock

Under-18s pay visit to Babcock

Our Under-18s Academy scholars recently visited Babcock to learn more about the employment opportunities outside of football.

The players and staff members spent the day at the Devonport Dockyard being shown around the facilities, how Babcock operates as an international defence company, and exploring different career opportunities with them and outside of the footballing world.

Lewis Reed spoke to the group about his career change from professional footballer to Babcock Director, whilst Peter Stokes gave a talk surrounding neurodiversity.

Second-year scholar Joe Hatch enjoyed his trip to Babcock and was glad to see what other opportunities are available if a career in football does not come to fruition.

“The Babcock visit was helpful for me,” said Joe. “I now have a bigger picture of jobs outside of sports and the different opportunities a company can provide. It was a real eye-opener for me.”

Head of Academy Player Care Mackenzie Brown said: "The two-year scholarship isn't just about football, and it's no secret that a professional career in the game won't work out for everyone, so we have a responsibility to make the boys aware of what else is out there.

“Babcock is the city's biggest employer, and there are many former Plymouth Argyle Academy scholars who have forged a fantastic career with the company.

“It was great to go inside the walls of the Dockyard and gain a better understanding of what they provide and what apprenticeship opportunities there are with them.

“Babcock Director Lewis Reed, an ex-professional footballer himself, gave an excellent insight into his transition and how the skillset gained on his scholarship helped him forge a new career with Babcock, which was invaluable advice for the boys."
