Under-18s Assist Plymouth Soup Run
Members of Argyle’s Under-18s team have played their part in delivering the daily Plymouth Soup Run.
Plymouth Soup Run is a service that provides food and drink to homeless and vulnerable people across the city on a daily basis. It relies on donations, volunteers and a huge amount of goodwill to be able to assist those in need throughout the year.
Various Plymouth institutions share the responsibility of organising each day’s run, and our Under-18s took on the task of doing so last Tuesday, 16 January, with assistance from some generous partners.
Project35, in partnership with Ginsters, donated 70 pasties; Tamar Fresh provided sandwiches and fruit; Big’s Brownies and Cakes provided the goodies that their name bears; and Boringdon Golf Club made and provided soup and hot drinks for the run.
Under-18s captain Lewis Colwell said: “We understand the place that our football club has in the community, so we wanted to give something back by assisting a brilliant organisation.
“I was very moved by the experience of delivering food and drink to vulnerable people in the city, and I know all the lads were too. It brings home what people go through, and I am pleased we could do our little bit to help.
“Respect also to people like Hilary Knight at Shekinah Mission who co-ordinated with us, and many others who give so much of their time. They are brilliant people.”
Argyle Academy Head of Player Care Mackenzie Brown added: “I am so proud of the lads for getting involved with this initiative. They really threw themselves into the planning of the Soup Run and were a credit to themselves and the football club for the way they applied themselves.
“Our Academy programmes are all about making our young players not only into better footballers but, just as importantly, into better, well-rounded human beings. Taking part in something like the Plymouth Soup Run can only help them develop as people.”
