Szucs relishing Championship opportunity

Argyle’s newest signing, Hungarian defender Kornel Szucs, is excited about his new project of playing in England for the first time.

The 22-year-old, who has joined Argyle for an undisclosed fee, arrives from Hungarian top-flight side Kecskeméti, and wants to continue his so-far impressive footballing development.

Having represented his country through age groups to under-21s, Kornel played in Europe for Kecskeméti against Riga FC, an experience that has obviously left an impression on him.

“When I went to Kecskeméti, my first match there was in the Europa Conference League,” Kornel told Argyle TV. “This was a very good and very big thing to happen to me. I was so happy about it and we won the first match.

“After that, we lost the second game, but it was nice to get to play there in the Conference League - and now in the Championship also.

“I'm looking forward to play as many matches as I can. I hope that everything will go well. I will try to give my best. I hope that I can fit into the team, I can play into the team, and everything will be good after that.”

Szucs is not the first Hungarian to join the Pilgrims. In the club’s last stint in the Sky Bet Championship, Akos Buzsaky, Peter Halmosi and Krisztian Timar all established good relationships with the Green Army, and are remembered fondly, including with a ‘Made in Hungary’ mural inside Home Park featuring them in action.

“I knew that there were some Hungarian players before me,” said Szucs, “and I heard really, really good things from the club. I also checked the city, the fans - and everything comes together.

“I'm very happy to be here. It's a big honour to be here and sign for this big club. I'm so excited to get started and I'm happy for this opportunity.”

Described as an athletic player, Kornel appears to bring versatility and energy to the backline. He explained what we can expect to see of him in the green and white.

“I play at centre back or right back; that's my two main positions,” he said. “I am a player who likes to play with passion. I think my biggest skill is my speed.

“At Kecskeméti we played in a three-defender formation - 3-5-2 - and most of the time I played on the right side. I was right wing-back or right midfielder sometimes, but my main position was centre back.

“It helped a lot to play not only just in one position. Sometimes it depends on the matches, but there were some matches that I started, for example, centre-back, but finished as a right-back.

“I will try to get know everybody and, after that, I will try to give my best for the badge.”
