Sutton United (H) Match Preview
The Game
Argyle v Sutton United. Home Park. Saturday, 6 January. 3pm. Emirates FA Cup third round.
The Opposition
Sutton United are currently 23rd in Sky Bet League Two. They have won four, drawn six and lost 15 of their league games so far. To get to the third round of the FA Cup, they have beaten beaten AFC Fylde 2-1, and Horsham 3-0.
Sutton were a non-league team for 123 years of their existence, before being promoted into the EFL in 2020/21. They finished eighth in their first year in League Two, then 14th last season.
Matt Gray, who was Sutton's manager when they promoted to the EFL, lost his job after the Amber and Chocolates lost 8-0 to Stockport County on 19th December. Jason Goodliffe, who was the assistant manager, has been in caretaker charge as the manager search goes on. Since Gray's dismissal, Sutton have lost 2-0 at home to Mansfield Town, won 1-0 at Wimbledon, lost 1-0 at Gillingham, then drawn 1-1 with Newport County.
The Squad
With ten goals, Harry Smith is Sutton's leading goalscorer, but is suspended having been sent off last weekend.
Omari Patrick is next on Sutton's goalscoring chart, with six goals. Patrick, 27, has played for Kidderminster Harriers, Bradford City and Burton Albion, as well as having two spells at Carlisle United. He left Brunton Park for Sutton in the summer of 2023.
Defender Joe Kizzi has made more appearances for Sutton than any other player this season, starting all but one of their games, and scoring one goal. Twice club Player of the Year, Kizzi joined Sutton from Bromley in the summer of 2021, just after United made it to the EFL. He has also played for Waltham Abbey, Cheshunt and Billericay Town.
Harry Beautyman has now played 219 times for Sutton. He joined from Stevenage in the midst of the 2017/18 season, and scored 11 times in United's promotion season of 2020/21. This season he has played in every game, starting 17, and scoring twice.
