SuperCupNI | Semi-Final Report
Argyle’s hard-fought performance against Glenavon ended in heartbreak with a loss on penalties in the SuperCupNI Globe semi-final.
The game finished 2-2 at full-time, but the Northern Ireland side were victorious on penalties, winning 4-3 in sudden death.
The game started in Glenavon’s favour following some high-pressure and aggressive defence. A whipped ball into the box caused issues for the Argyle back line and ended up in the back of the net following a sliced clearance.
The Young Pilgrims used this deficit as fuel and fought back valiantly, winning the ball high up the pitch and causing problems on the wings. Halfway through the first half, Argyle won a free-kick on the edge of Glenavon’s area and scored a leveller through captain Alexander York-Stephens’ effort.
After going into half-time level, Glenavon took an early lead again. However, just minutes later, a through ball behind the defence allowed Yago Pico Corrales to fly forward and finish with a low shot across the keeper, his second goal of the competition.
The game continued to be a back-and-forth affair until the full-time whistle blew and sent the game to a penalty shoot-out. Both goalkeepers made saves to keep their teams in the game, but Glenavon ended as victors.
The week will conclude with the Globe play-off fixture against Cliftonville at Anderson Park, Coleraine, at 11am on Friday.
