Sam Cosgrove vs Derby

Sam's dream debut

As debuts go, Sam Cosgrove’s was pretty decent.

Two goals in 15 minutes, with just seven touches, oh and to win the game – name me a better introduction.

The 6 foot 4 inch striker only joined the Greens on Thursday and was sent on with Argyle trailing 2-1 to Derby County at Pride Park – go on, make an impact.

Well, Sam did.

“I think I had a dream about something like that last night but no, in all seriousness, that’s as good as they come.”

“Watching from the bench, the first thoughts that came to mind was impressive, we were playing well. We could have had a couple of goals in the first half and sometimes it just doesn’t go for you.”

As impressive as Argyle were, Derby were clinical. Two chances, two goals – the sign of a quality side.

Morgan Whittaker pulled a goal back for Argyle early in the second half, and then it was over to the debutant to make the headlines.

“When you come on, you just want to make an impact,” Sam said.

“I think it was my second touch and I was putting the ball into the back of the net. Niall did amazing for it, squared it across and I followed up at the back post, so fair play to him.”

If Sam is crediting Niall Ennis for his first goal, then his second, the winner, was all down to him.

He chased a loose ball over the top, robbed the defender and calmly slotted the ball past the ‘keeper with the outside of his right boot, how cool?

“As a striker you have to gamble on any mistake, and the lad had had quite a good game to be fair to him, but thankfully I was there to capitalise.”

No sooner had the ball hit the net, than the 2,300 strong Green Army contingent were flung into extreme celebrations.

The long journey had been worth it, of course it had. The early morning and service station coffee forgotten, Argyle had won and won brilliantly.

“As soon as the ball hit the net for the winner, it took a couple of seconds for it to process.

“Once it went in, it was absolute extasy and I couldn’t be happier for the boys, the staff and the fans.”

What a performance Sam, now do that every week please.
