Ryan Perks Pleased With Manchester United Showing
Argyle Women’s Head Coach Ryan Perks believes his youthful side deserved a win against Manchester United Under-21s at Carrington on Saturday.
In a trip funded by the generosity of Evergreen, the tie at the Red Devils’ training facility ended one apiece, with Argyle’s goal coming from Charlotte Whitmore’s penalty. Some dominant attacking football from the Greens saw the woodwork of the hosts being struck four times and a penalty saved in the final minute of the game.
“I’m a little bit disappointed we haven't come away with a win,” Perks told Argyle TV. “I think it was deserved, but it's a great experience for the girls to play at a place like Manchester United and against a very good team.
“I think we started the game a little bit slow and were a little bit in awe being at Manchester United and Carrington. I think we give them a little bit too much respect. They took an early lead, but we grew into the game.
“We’ve asked them to set up slightly differently out of possession. It took a little time to get used to it and get across what we wanted, but we grew into the game and got a deserved equaliser through Charlotte's penalty.
“In the second half I thought we grew into the game earlier and it was a lot more dominant from us. We hit the bar twice - one I think crossed the line – then Grace hit the bar, Char hit the post and we've missed the penalty right at the end.”
Whitmore’s first-half penalty was Argyle’s only goal of the game but, being a Manchester United fan, she revelled in the moment after her spot-kick rippled the netting.
“Char was buzzing all weekend,” Perks said. “We went around Old Trafford, and she didn't stop smiling, and to get a goal at the club she supports and loves is a milestone for her. I thought her performance was superb from start to finish.
“She executed the game plan. We asked her to do something without the ball and she was fantastic today. It's a great opportunity for all the players to come to a place like here. We had the under-16s alongside us playing as well.”
Before kick-off on Saturday, Lulu Jarvis and Ava Kuyken were announced as Argyle players, joining from Brighton and Reading respectively. Perks was delighted with their performances at Carrington and is excited for the experience they will bring to a squad full of youth.
He said: “Lulu's played a few games as a trialist before, so she's settled into the squad. I think she had an excellent performance and showed glimpses of what she can do. She had a rough season last year at Reading and it's just about growing her confidence and that self-belief, and I think that will come with time.
“Ava’s been out for a long time with an injury and it’s good to get 45 minutes in the legs for her. You can see the quality she possesses, and she linked up well and looked strong in the middle alongside Imy. I think they've both slotted in and complimented the team well.
“I've said it before, I took on the job four years ago knowing what's coming through the system, and it's evident today. We're a relatively young side. We've added a bit more age with Lulu and Ava topping up the age, but they’re only 20 and 23!
“We only had three players start who were over 21, so we've got a fantastic future at this club. We just need to make sure we nurture the talent and keep them at the club. The future is bright.”
