Preview | Oxford United v Argyle Women
Plymouth Argyle Women return to Court Place Farm this Sunday to take on title contenders Oxford United Women in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division.
Argyle will be looking to bounce back from last week's frustrating outing against Gillingham Women FC, where a first-half Georgia Griffin brace condemned the Greens to a 2-0 defeat. Speaking after the match, manager Ryan Perks shared his thoughts on his side's performance. “We simply weren’t good enough against Gillingham. The girls know that, and we know that so it’s just a case of rectifying the details that went wrong and improving on that for Oxford.
"The second-half performance was a lot better. So, we just need to take the positives from that 45-minute spell and apply it to the match as a whole. Before that game, we had some great performances, so we know what we’re capable of and we just need to rediscover that level of quality for this weekend’s match.”
A high level will surely be needed, with this weekend's opposition, the U’s, currently sitting second in the league with two games in hand on Ipswich Town Women FC. Oxford’s previous five games in the league have yielded four wins, with only Cheltenham Town Ladies being able to take points away from the promotion hopefuls.
This fixture marks the third time this season that Argyle and Oxford have faced each other, and so Perks has a good idea of what to expect when the two sides clash this weekend. He said: “We know they're a good side and we know they need the points just as much as we do this weekend. I think if we took our chances in the last game against them in the FA Cup it could’ve ended up 7-5. But it was one of those days where we just couldn’t find the target with the numerous amounts of chances we made.”
“Looking ahead to this weekend we know from previous games that we have the ability to hurt them. The players just need to relax and take their chances when they come. If we do that I think we can come away with a positive result and then use that to give us more belief and confidence going into the final few games of the season.”
Tickets for the match cost £6, Over 65s cost £3 and U18s go free. If you cannot make it to the game, then updates are available on Twitter.
