Preview | Hull City (H)
The Game
Argyle v Hull City. Home Park. Saturday, 17 August. 3pm. Sky Bet Championship.
The Opposition
Hull were Argyle’s final opponents of the 2023/24 season. While the win for the Pilgrims kept Argyle up, it confirmed that Hull would not reach the end-of-season play-offs. They subsequently parted company with head coach Liam Rosenior, who has since been named as manager of French club Strasbourg.
The Gaffer
Tim Walter was Rosenior’s replacement, taking the job at the end of May. Walter had previously spent just under three years as manager of Hamburg, in the second tier of his native Germany. Twice, his side got to a promotion play-off but were defeated. He was then sacked in February. Walter has also managed Bayern Munich’s reserve team, Holstein Kiel and Stuttgart.
The Squad
Charlie Hughes signed for Hull on Friday, the latest in a succession of signings for the Tigers, who made a slow start to their summer transfer activities.
Many of City’s star names from last season – Jaden Philogene, Tyler Morton, Liam Delap, Jacob Greaves, Ozan Tufan and Fabio Carvalho – have been sold or their loans have expired. Hughes, a highly rated defender from Wigan, looks a good signing, and recent arrivals of Finley Burns, on loan from Manchester City, and Liam Millar (below), from Basel, look smart acquisitions.
Millar spent last season on loan at Preston North End and scored in both of the Lilywhites’ games against Argyle.
The Season So Far
Hull began with a league game against Bristol City at home. The Bristolians took the lead on 84 minutes through Fally Mayulu, and thought they had won the game, only for Hull to be awarded a late penalty, converted by Oscar Estupinan.
In the Carabao Cup, Hull were again at home, this time against fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. Following up their opening weekend win against Argyle, the Owls knocked Hull out of the cup, in a game full of early action.
Wednesday’s Charlie McNeill scored in the first minute, with Marvin Mehlem equalising for Hull in the ninth. Almost immediately, McNeill scored again, and there the scoring ceased.
Last Season’s Meetings
Argyle travelled to Hull in September and drew 1-1. Adam Randell opened the scoring for the Pilgrims, only for it to be equalised before half-time by Regan Slater.
The home fixture was the final game of last season, and saw Joe Edwards scoring the game’s early goal, sparking scenes of celebration as it meant Argyle ensured another season of Sky Bet Championship action.
