Preview | Argyle Women v Oxford United Women
Argyle will look to bounce back from an opening day defeat as they host Oxford United in the first FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division home game of the season. The game takes place this Sunday at Manadon Sports and Community Hub, with a 2.30pm kick-off.
The first game of the league campaign ended in a disappointing loss in last week’s away trip to Cheltenham Town Ladies. Two standout performances from the Pilgrim's previous fixture were goalscorer Charlotte Whitmore and goalkeeper Jasmine Read.
Whitmore scored a stunning shot from distance that looped over the keeper in the first half to open her account for the season and Charlotte will be eager to continue that goalscoring form in front of the home supporters this weekend.
Read made some impressive saves, including two fingertip stops and a superb penalty save in the second half, and at times looked to have kept Argyle in the game.
Attention now turns to Sunday, when The Pilgrims will be eager to secure their first points of the season in front of a home crowd.
Argyle Manager Ryan Perks will be pleased to welcome back some experienced players for the fixture to bolster the squad, with club captain Zoe Cunningham returning, as well midfielders Beth Ireland and Jemma Rose. New signing Lily Greenslade is also in contention to make an appearance this Sunday.
Oxford are in fourth place in the table after a 2-0 win in their opening game against Bridgewater United at home. Their goals came from midfielder Naomi Cole and defender Riva Casley. Liam Gilbert’s side will be looking to improve on an impressive 2021/22 campaign which saw them finish second, just missing out on a promotion play-off.
The game will be held at Manadon Sports & Community Hub, kick-off is at 2:30 pm, tickets cost £5 for adults while under-3s have free entry. If you can’t make it to the game, then updates are available on social media @ArgyleWFC.
