Preview | Argyle Women v Cardiff City Ladies
Argyle Women return to Home Park this Sunday, 8th January. After the winter break comes to an end the Greens will be delighted to see the home fans’ friendly faces once more as Argyle take on Cardiff City Ladies in the FA Women’s National League Cup.
After three weeks away from football, Ryan Perks’ side is itching to return to action after a refreshing break over the Christmas period. “The Girls are ready to get going again,” said Perks. “We set them some targets to achieve over the break, tested them again earlier in the week in the first training session back and they exceeded our expectations which we were pleased about.”
Before the break, Argyle’s last fixture of the 2022 calendar year was away to Oxford United Women whose 3-0 win at Court Place Farm saw the Greens exit the Vitality Women's FA Cup in the third round of the competition. Before this result, Perk's side had a positive spell of form, winning three of their last five matches. “The girls have been fantastic over the last few months and have shown what they’re capable of against any opposition,” said Ryan. “Although we lost the Oxford game, the girls still put in a quality shift, it was just taking our chances in front of goal that let us down on the day.”
Cardiff City Ladies are currently undefeated in the FAWNL Southern Division South West One, scoring 15 goals across their last three games played. The Dragons’ previous result in the cup was a 4-3 win over Actonians and with confidence at an all-time high for the visitors, they will be eager to keep their positive form going.
“They’ll be coming here full of confidence and will be expecting to beat us,” said Perks. “Last year we beat them 5-1 away from home and 2-1 at home thanks to a last-minute winner. Their performances of late have been very dominant and they’re currently undefeated in the league so it won’t be an easy game. However, I’m confident in the squad we have for this Sunday and if we play as well as we know we can, I expect us to get the victory this Sunday.”
This fixture not only marks the first game in this calendar year but also Argyle Women’s return to Home Park after a long period away. The gaffer had this to say on Argyle’s return to the Theatre of Greens: “We’re looking forward to playing here again. It wasn’t long ago we played Ipswich here and the turnout from the fans was unbelievable, so we can’t wait to experience the support once again. We’ve been away from home for some time now so to come back and have a huge crowd welcoming us into the New Year is special.”
The game will be held at Home Park on Sunday, 8th January. Kick-off is at 2pm. Tickets cost £8 for adults, £1 for 12–18-year-olds unaccompanied by an adult. Under-18s accompanied by a fee-paying adult go FREE. If you cannot make it to the game, then updates are available on social @ArgyleWFC.
