Nexus Members Enjoy Unique Insight
Members of the Argyle Nexus Business Club were treated to an exclusive peek behind the scenes at Home Park at a recent meeting of the group.
After a convivial brunch in the Tribute Players’ Lounge, members were addressed by Argyle Director of Football Neil Dewsnip, who gave an insight into his role, and some of the processes involved in recruitment, training and development of players.
This was followed by a trip to Harper’s Park, the Argyle training facility, where Nexus members saw the squad being put through their paces by manager Steven Schumacher and his staff.
The event was the latest in a series for Nexus members, an innovation designed to bring together leading business figures in the area, utilising Argyle’s unique position as a Plymouth community powerhouse.
Bob Truesdale, General Manager of Scutum South West, was at the event. “We’ve had a long-standing relationship with Plymouth Argyle, as a supplier of fire and security products in the stadium,” he said. “Nexus seemed like a great opportunity for us. Our business model needs to grow across the South West, and being connected with Argyle, with their wide diversity of fans across the area, seemed like a good opportunity to get our brand out into Devon and Cornwall.
“We’re supporters of the club as well. We want to be involved with what’s going on. The exciting things that are happening, things like the Muse concert next year, it’s all great for Argyle, and to be linked with the brand – we couldn’t ask for anything else.”
Simon York, Business Development Manager of Great Annual Savings, added: “It’s been a fantastic partnership for us so far. Today is all about the networking, finding out more about each other. All of us have the same goal in mind, which is doing the best we can for Plymouth Argyle and the local community.
“Seeing some ins and outs of the first team, being around the training and meeting the people behind the scenes, especially Neil, to get a bit of an insight into the club makes a huge difference. I’m just walking around with a smile on my face!
“To be able to offer something back to the club, to hopefully help them push on further in the next couple of years, is brilliant.”
Argyle Commercial Development Manager Matt Kimberley said: “Our Nexus members consist of businesses from across the county and nationwide.
“We’ve invited them in as a way of networking. As part of their package, we feel it is important they get some access behind the scenes.
“The idea is that businesses that network with each other, we all win, it comes back into the football club and makes us all stronger.
“It is important that our sponsors feel part of the club, as an Argyle business family. We get to know each other not just as businesses, but as people.
“The feedback is that people see Argyle as a central hub. We want to encourage businesses to come here, as a central point for Plymouth. It’s a great for people who are not just passionate about the football but of Plymouth as an area to group in one place.”
Neil Dewsnip said: “I really enjoyed the morning speaking to the business community of Plymouth, who are committed to the Nexus project. It was wonderful to discuss and share insight into my role at the club. I answered a million questions, but thoroughly enjoyed doing so!
“What was obvious was that there is cohesion between my work and that of the business community. I hope we can continue to investigate developing that relationship.”
