Michael Obafemi

Michael Obafemi joins Argyle on loan

Argyle have signed Irish international Michael Obafemi.

The 24-year-old forward has signed on loan for the rest of the season from Burnley, having spent the conclusion of last season in the Sky Bet Championship, at Millwall.

Obafemi was born in Dublin but spent time at various English clubs as a youngster, eventually coming through the ranks at Southampton. When he made his Saints debut, aged 17, he was the second-youngest player to play for the Hampshire club, behind Luke Shaw.

Michael made 39 appearances for Southampton, 32 of them in the Premier League, mostly as a substitute, scoring five goals. After the start of the 2021/22 season, he signed for Swansea City, in the Championship, and scored 12 times in 33 games that campaign.

Towards the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, he joined Burnley and played a part in their promotion to the Premier League, making his transfer to the Clarets permanent afterwards.

Michael played twice in the Premier League last year, before switching to Millwall, playing a part in the Lions’ improvement after the appointment of Neil Harris last season.

Obafemi made his international debut for Ireland in 2018 and has earned 12 caps. He has scored two international goals, both in the Nations League.

On landing the signature of Michael, Argyle Head Coach Wayne Rooney said: “We are thrilled that we have managed to secure the services of Michael. He was really keen to come and be a part of what we are building here at Argyle.

“He fits the profile of player I want as part of the squad and complements the style of play we are looking to implement.

Director of Football Neil Dewsnip added: “We have beaten off several Championship sides to bring Michael to the football club.

“He has excellent pedigree having played at both Championship and Premier League level throughout his career and will further strengthen our forward line.

“He’s quick, powerful and scores goals, and we are really excited that he has decided to join us for the rest of the season.”

The loan signing is subject to EFL approval. Michael will wear squad number 14 and is sponsored by Embers Cornwall.
