Match Preview | Cheltenham Town v Argyle

Sync Fixtures

Argyle take on Cheltenham Town for the second consecutive Boxing Day, hoping to emulate their 2-0 win from last season.

Goals from Panutche Camara and Jordon Garrick made the difference on that day, marking the fifth consecutive league visit to the Completely-Suzuki Stadium in which Argyle have come away with the three points.

Cheltenham are 17th in Sky Bet League One, with 25 points from 20 games. They have only conceded 22 goals all season – for comparison, leaders Argyle have conceded 25 in 22 – but Town have scored just 16 times in the league, the fewest of any team in the division.

Half of those goals have been scored by forwards Alfie May (five) and Dan Nlundulu (three), with former Argyle loan midfielder Ryan Broom chipping in with two. Broom, who played 48 times for the Pilgrims last season, also has two goals in the Papa Johns Trophy this season, scoring one of Cheltenham’s four when they beat Chelsea Under-21s in his last appearance.

Cheltenham are managed by former Bournemouth and Burnley midfielder Wade Elliott. After his playing career, he held development coaching posts for Bristol City, Forest Green Rovers and Stoke City. He joined Cheltenham as a coach in September 2020, and took the manager’s job in July when previous boss Michael Duff left to manage Barnsley.

Schumacher Says
“They don’t give you too much. They’ve won 1-0 five times, so it shows how defensively solid they are, and how organised they are.

“Their defenders are physical, no nonsense, and they defend their goal well. They have under-performed on what their expected goals would be. They create some real good chances and haven’t been clinical with them.

“We need to make sure we don’t give them too many chances because we know Alfie May is a quality player at this level, and Dan Nlundulu is a handful. Defensively we have to be on it, and we need to pass the ball as well as we possibly can on a tight pitch.”
