Match Preview | Burton Albion v Argyle
For a third straight Saturday, Argyle are on the road, this time heading to Burton Albion.
The Brewers are second from bottom in Sky Bet League One, with 13 points from their 18 games. While Burton’s away record is the worst in the division, their home form is showing signs of picking up. They lost their first four games at the Pirelli Stadium, but have won two and drawn two of their last five at home.
Last Saturday, they drew 3-3 at home to Charlton Athletic, and in their previous game at their HQ, beat Cheltenham Town 1-0. In between, they lost games at Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday, as well as advancing to the second round of the Emirates FA Cup at the expense of Needham Market.
Albion are managed by Dino Maamria, who took over from Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in September, having previously been his assistant. Maamria was a coach under Graham Westley at Stevenage, Preston North End and Newport County, before taking the manager’s job at Southport. He has also managed Nuneaton Town, Stevenage and Oldham Athletic.
Burton’s top goalscorer is Victor Adeboyejo, who has scored ten goals this season, eight in the league, and all ten coming in his last 16 games. Formerly with Barnsley, and having had loan spells with Bristol Rovers and Cambridge United, Adeboyejo signed for Burton in the summer.
Another summer acquisition, Davis Keillor-Dunn, who was previously with Oldham, has weighed in with five goals from midfield. Experienced defender John Brayford is still a fixture in the Burton backline, and has passed 300 games for the Brewers.
Argyle do not have a good record at the Pirelli Stadium. Our first of seven trips to Burton was in 2011, and we have come away, over the years with four draws and three defeats. Those draws have come on our last four visits: three 1-1 scorelines, followed by a 0-0 stalemate last season.
Schumacher Says
"Playing there as a player, I remember what it was always like. A tight pitch, fans right on top of you. The style can be that the game is stop-start. It was like that last season, and the season before wasn’t a great spectacle to watch.
“We just have to go there and put in a performance that gets you a result. We understand what they are all about. They’ve been good at home lately. I watched the game against Charlton, I thought they played really well.
“They’ve got some firepower in the team, like I feel I say every week. That’s what we are up against, and we have to make sure we play well, battle well, compete – and then pass the ball and play our football. That’s how we will have the best chance of winning.”
