Match Preview | Argyle v Charlton Athletic
For the first time in three weeks, Argyle return to Home Park as they host Charlton Athletic in the second round of the Papa Johns Trophy.
Charlton sit 14th in Sky Bet League One with 24 points from 19 league games this season. When the sides met in the league in mid-August, Charlton won 5-1. However, after that, the Addicks went eight league games without a win, before winning three in a row. Subsequently, they have gone four without a win.
On Saturday, Charlton lost 1-0 to Port Vale and a week earlier they travelled to Argyle’s previous opponents Burton Albion and drew 3-3. Charlton have also progressed through the next rounds of the Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
To reach the second round of the Papa Johns Trophy, Charlton finished second in their group, behind Colchester United, and above Gillingham and Brighton and Hove Albion Under-21s.
Charlton manager Ben Garner has had experience with top level clubs at the coaching level including West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace. His first management experience was spending a year at Bristol Rovers, and later he was appointed by Swindon Town. During a difficult time at the club he rebuilt and took them to the play-offs in his first season. This attracted the attention of Charlton, who made Garner their boss in June this year.
Charlton’s top goalscorer Jesurun Rak-Sakyi has five goals and three assists in 18 games this season, on loan from Crystal Palace. Addicks captain Jayden Stockley has three goals and three assists this season. The former Bournemouth, Aberdeen and Exeter forward scored 20 times for the Addicks last season.
Kick-off Time
The game kicks off at 7pm.
Schumacher Says
“I’ve looked at their team, and the team the analysts have put in front of me, with all the changes, is still very strong. Charlton are a good club in this division and have a good squad, a big squad. Whoever they put on the pitch will have good quality."
Team News
Mickel Miller is expected to play a part in the game, having made his return from a long-term injury in the closing stages of Saturday's game at Burton Albion. With several injuries in the first-team squad, it is expected that several young pros and Under-18s will feature.
