Lowry previews U17 Devon Derby
An exciting night awaits Argyle’s Under-17s on Wednesday, 16 October, when the Devon Derby returns to Home Park, this time for Professional Development League Cup action.
Head Coach Jamie Lowry’s side have a chance to secure their first points of the cup competition, as they take on Exeter City. Kick-off is at 7pm.
Lowry is excited to take to the Home Park sidelines but also understands how important and exciting it will be for the squad involved and the challenge awaiting his side against their bitter rivals.
“It’s really special for the boys and the staff,” Lowry told Argyle TV. “Being at Home Park and under the lights, it's a different dynamic. We’re very fortunate at this football club where the majority of the lads have played at Home Park already, with the club being really supportive throughout the age groups at some point. Maybe not all under the lights, so that will be a special occasion, but it’s something they're really excited about and we're all looking forward to.
“It's something that they'll probably not be used to. Obviously, we play games on Saturday mornings, and we have a few evening games, but not at Home Park, so it's something that they'll have to get used to if they're going to go and make a career. It'll be a little bit of a different atmosphere.
“Hopefully, there will be a good crowd there to back it up, but it’s exciting for them to look forward to and go and enjoy.
“Playing against Exeter is always something that we're competitive about. We want to be better than them up the road! We've got to deal with the dynamics of it being competitive. Obviously, they'll want to get one back on us after we beat them earlier in the season, but it is always competitive with us being rivals.
“So, it's something that we must manage. The intensity of the game, maybe the little niggles in and out of the game and stuff like that as well. It's something that we have managed well in the past, and something we need to continue to think about.”
In the opening game of the competition, Argyle heartbreakingly lost 2-1 to Cardiff City in the dying minutes. Lowry was extremely pleased with his side’s performance away from home and is hoping for more of the same at the Theatre of Greens on Wednesday.
He said: “I think something we've spoken about recently is performing well and that opportunity to have a good performance together, which in turn, hopefully leads to results. Against Cardiff, we played really well, we went 1-0 up and then went down to 10 men, which didn't help us.
“Overall, I was pleased with the performance. Now, it's about how the boys deal with the game being under the lights at Home Park. For me, it's about the team's performance. Can we control the game with possession? Can we attack and have lots of attacking opportunities? That will lead to a result if we get those things ticked off.”
