Gillesphey Signs for Charlton Athletic
Macaulay Gillesphey has joined Charlton Athletic.
The 28-year-old defender has signed for the Addicks after two-and-a-half seasons as a Pilgrim. The fee is undisclosed, as per EFL regulations.
Gillesphey played 91 times for Argyle, and scored four goals, including in some memorable games. His first goal came at Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea, who at the time were the reigning European champions. Argyle would go on to lose the game 2-1 after extra-time, but Gillesphey’s deft header gave the Green Army a moment they would never forget.
He also scored the winner later that year in a 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers, and in last season’s title-winning campaign got the second goal in a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers which put the Pilgrims on the brink of promotion.
Gillesphey came through the Newcastle United academy, but got his break via a loan spell, then permanent transfer, at Carlisle United. He spent two years in Australia, playing for Brisbane Roar, before making the move to Home Park.
Thank you, Macca, and good luck.
