Ennis's Wycombe Preview
Argyle’s home game against Wycombe Wanderers on Thursday night, 29 December, is the final fixture of 2022.
The first of 2023 is fewer than three days on it’s tail, but for Argyle forward, the conveyor belt of games is welcomed, especially as Argyle have hit the halfway stage of the season on top of Sky Bet League One, with 50 points from 23 games.
Ennis, though, is trying to stay level-headed, and is refusing to cast his mind any further forward than the next game in hand.
“It feels that every time I blink it’s a match-day!” Niall told Argyle TV. “But that’s what we are here to do: play matches. I enjoy matches more than training; I think every player does. I just want to get the games going.
“I try not to get too high or too low, because we’re only halfway there. We can get overexcited now but we’ve got a long way to go. We’ve got to listen to what the gaffer says and just take every game as it comes.”
That next game sees Wycombe becoming the first team that Argyle will have played twice during the 2022/23 season. In October, the Pilgrims won 1-0 at Adams Park, in a game that saw Argyle go toe-to-toe with a Wycombe side known for their physicality.
Niall expects the challenge to be a similar one, but believes that a sell-out Home Park crowd being behind the team can assist the Greens in playing their favoured brand of football, and continuing a staggeringly positive record at the Theatre of Greens this term.
“We make it a fortress,” said Niall. “The fans help us and carry us through the games. Hopefully that is what happens on Thursday night.
“It’s usually a slugfest, but we’re at home and we want to play how people expect us to play. We want to play attractive football, and the gaffer’s given us a game plan. Hopefully it goes how we want it to go, and we get the win.”
