Brendan Galloway signs new Argyle deal
Brendan Galloway is staying at Argyle.
The defender, whose current contract was set to expire at the end of June, has agreed to a new deal which keeps him as a Pilgrim until 2026.
Speaking to Argyle TV on signing his new contract, Brendan said: “This is a place that I've called home for the past few years, and I love every single thing about the club: the players, the staff, the fans, the togetherness. It was important for me to stay here.
“The fans are incredible; the best fans that I've ever experienced. It's a club on the rise and I just want to be a part of the journey.”
The news of Galloway agreeing to extend his stay comes in the same week as the arrival of Argyle’s first summer signing, Nathanael Ogbeta, and of course the appointment of new Head Coach, Wayne Rooney.
Brendan says that he was likely to sign a new deal anyway, but Rooney’s arrival rubber-stamped his decision.
“The main thing was the club overall; that made my decision,” said Brendan, “but I think with the new gaffer coming in, that was a factor as well. He was a great player, a great coach - he's a serial winner.
“Working with someone like that, he'll only bring that winning mentality to us. I think that he'll instil that into us: that hard work, that mentality and that willingness to win.
“I think that we can improve massively under him. We can now reach that next step with him.”
Brendan joined Argyle in the summer of 2021, and soon showed the strength and composure that underscored an ability far beyond that of Sky Bet League One, where Argyle resided at the time.
Galloway’s class had seen him leave his first club Milton Keynes Dons in favour of Premier League Everton, and he also spent time with Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion, on loan, in the Championship.
He moved to Luton Town, but played just six times in two seasons, finding himself a free agent aged 25.
When Galloway joined Argyle in 2021, the Greens offered an initial six-month contract. His ability was clear from the outset, but an injury in November of the same year ended Brendan’s season shortly before his contract was due to run out.
Argyle stuck by the Zimbabwean, offering an 18-month deal, which he accepted. The following season, 2022/23, saw Galloway play 24 times, starting 18 of those games, as the Pilgrims clinched promotion from League One. It would undoubtedly have been more, but for more injury issues. It was, though, enough to trigger a further year’s contract.
Galloway did not play in the Championship for Argyle until November. Once he was back, though, he was really back. Able to play in the middle or on the left of defence, Galloway’s unflappable style saw him easily adapt back to life in England’s second tier, and he excelled in the 29 games in which he played.
