Argyle Women Secure Survival
Argyle will be playing FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division football once again next season, after securing survival on the final day of the season.
The Pilgrims went into their home fixture with Milton Keynes Dons knowing a win would keep them up, and they did just that, coming away with a 3-0 victory.
As it happens, Bridgwater United’s 4-0 defeat at London Bees would have meant Argyle staying up no matter their result, but the Greens did it in style, with Georgia Wilson scoring in the first half, before captain Zoe Cunningham led by example with a second half double, including a long-range effort to round things off.
"It was a fantastic performance from the girls," said manager Ryan Perks. "We knew the pressure was on, and we knew it was in our own hands. To get the job done today was brilliant. The players executed the game plan and listened to the tactics - they were superb.
"I think we totally dominated the game from start to finish and we got what we deserved. I know London Bees won as well but it's nice to do the job ourselves. The table looks a lot nicer now.
"After our second went in, I knew it was job done. I was quite relaxed to be honest. I just think we were on it from the start. We pressed with intensity and credit goes to the players.
"We've been asking for that performance all season. We know how good a side we are. If we perform for 90 mins we can compete with the top teams in the league. MK are a very good side and we're buzzing to get over the line.
"We could hear the fans singing. There was a group of young supporters signing the Argyle songs which was lovely to see. What a great weekend for the football club.”
Argyle were superb from the off, taking the lead in the first half thanks to an incredible strike from Wilson that flew into the top corner of the net. Argyle continued to dominate in the second half and scored a further two goals thanks to some individual brilliance from skipper Cunningham.
Her first saw her sublimely dribble through the Dons defence, before calmly slotting under the keeper. Cunningham completed her brace with a stunning strike from distance that flew over the goalkeeper and into the top corner to the delight of the Green Army in attendance.
Argyle can now enjoy their summer, and will once again play third-tier football next season.
