Argyle Rank Top Five for EFL Sustainability
Argyle have surged straight into the top five in the inaugural Sport Positive EFL rankings, which measures clubs’ commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible operations.
The Greens placed second in Sky Bet League One, behind only Forest Green Rovers, who lead the overall table, and fifth in the EFL as a whole.
Sport Positive launched in the 2018/19 season, initially benchmarking top-flight clubs’ commitment to sustainable sport, and has branched out to include the Bundesliga in Germany and France’s Ligue 1. This year is the first inclusion of the 72 EFL clubs.
The process involves collation of key environmental sustainability information for every football club into a league table matrix. The categories reflect the environmental impacts of putting on a sports match, and initiatives that are under way at clubs, put together in an easy and digestible format.
Argyle scored particularly highly on sustainability of transport, communications and engagement on sustainability, clean energy, low carbon food, and policy and commitment.
Recent Green initiatives at Home Park have included the launch of our first ever environmental plan, the installation of an innovative rainwater harvesting system and further solar panels, the reduction of food waste by partnering with Too Good to Go, the elimination of single use plastic cups, a commitment to green energy, and installation of ultra-efficient LED lighting throughout Home Park.
The Sport Positive ranking follows a series of commendations for Argyle’s environment credentials in recent times, including scooping the prestigious Stadium Business Awards Sustainability & Community award alongside VfL Wolfsburg in 2022, alongside local recognition at the Plymouth Live Business Awards.
Argyle’s Head of Venue, Christian Kent, who takes project responsibility for the Greens’ sustainability operations, said: “We’re delighted to have polled so well in the maiden Sport Positive EFL rankings.
“It is just reward for the club’s central commitment to playing our part in environmental sustainability, but we know there is a long way to go.
“We thank our supporters for embracing the numerous green initiatives we have implemented in recent times, it would not be possible to take such proactive measures without the support of the Green Army.”
