Argyle crowned Select Soccer Invitational champions
Argyle were named champions in the Select Soccer invitational, formerly the Oakham tournament, in Leicestershire earlier this month.
At the end of July and the start of August, a squad of under-16s and under-15s players represented the Greens in the tournament, losing only one game on the way to victory.
The Young Pilgrims started the group stages with four consecutive victories, beating Kerry FC, NCE New York, Stamford AFC, and Napa United of California. Argyle’s only loss came in the final group stage fixture against Independent Schools FA (ISFA).
Finishing on 12 points, Argyle secured a place in ‘top three’ play-off and eventually won the competition after beating Napa United in the semi-final and ISFA in the final.
Argyle’s coach for the tournament, James Bradley, said: “It’s a great experience for the lads, and it’s good to take them away from home. They got to learn about each other on and off the pitch to further their relationships together.
“We looked to create a professional environment to try and help them understand what it will be like further in their career.
“Ultimately, we were able to win the whole thing, and I’m delighted with that and how the squad played over the three days in Leicestershire.”
