R.I.P Derek Ufton

Plymouth Argyle is saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Derek Ufton, aged 92.

Born in Crayford in 1928, Derek enjoyed tandem playing careers in both football and cricket, combining roles a first-class wicket-keeper for Kent with centre-half duties for Charlton Athletic.

Having retired from his playing days in 1960, with one international football cap for England under his belt, Derek began his coaching career with Tooting & Mitcham, before joining Malcolm Allison’s backroom staff at Home Park for the 1964-65 campaign.

When Allison departed Devon to join Manchester City in 1965, Derek took the reins at Home Park, where he remained manager for a 115-game spell in all competitions, departing in 1968.

After his management career was over, Derek returned to both Charlton Athletic in a leadership capacity, serving as director at the Valley for a 25-year spell. In 2001, he was appointed President of Kent County Cricket Club.
