YOUTH: Yeovil Town 0 Argyle 3
The young Pilgrims cruised to a comfortable 3-0 victory at Yeovil Town in Merit League action on Tuesday afternoon.
The Greens got off to an excellent start, and took the lead after 12 minutes, with Charlie Miller heading wing-back Oscar Rutherford’s cross into the bottom left corner of the Glovers’ net.
Having dominated the opening exchanges, the Greens were nearly architects of their own downfall just minutes after taking the lead, as a sloppy pass invited a Yeovil striker to go one-on-one with Tyler Coombes, but the young goalkeeper stood his ground to force his opponent wide, with the eventual strike hitting the side-netting.
On the stroke of half-time, the Greens doubled their advantage with a flowing move. Carlo Garside’s smart switch out to Rutherford on the wing was turned back inside Finley Craske, whose cross was headed home by Rhys Shirley.
The third and final goal was added just after the hour mark, with Argyle countering to devastating effect. Forward Oscar Massey led the charge on the breakaway and initially attempted to pull the ball square for arriving teammates.
His attempted pass was partially blocked, but the deflection fell straight back to him, and he made no mistake with the rebound.
Speaking after the victory, Argyle Academy coach Jamie Lowry said: “There are pleasing elements of the win – three goals and a clean sheet is a good afternoon for the group overall.
“However, there is still plenty to work on. I felt we could have been sharper in and out of possession, and we will need to work on these aspects of play in our remaining games.”
