Ryan on Dom
ARGYLE manager Ryan Lowe gave the Green Army a brief glimpse of what they can expect from new forward Dom Telford in the weekend's pre-season friendly.
The frontman netted six goals in the league last season and impressively bagged seven in as many appearances as the Shakers went to within touching distance of Wembley in the Checkatrade Trophy, losing out to eventual winners Portsmouth in the semi-final.
The manager, first and foremost, provided an update on Dom’s fitness, as he has obviously joined our pre-season schedule a little after his new team-mates.
“He is a bit rusty,” said Ryan. “I was cautious, I didn’t even want to put him on [at Plymouth Parkway on Saturday]. I was cautious putting him on because he hasn’t done much at all, that’s why he only got 15-20 minutes.”
“We have got to show these fans that we are bringing good players to the football club and it’s only right they see him. He only trained for one day, but the kid was chomping at the bit to get on.”
While the final decision over any player involvement rests with Ryan, he conceded that there has to be some give and take between listening to the players themselves and trusting his own judgement.
“I have to listen to him a little bit,” said Lowe. “Players want to play every game, but for [Antoni] Sarcevic, [Scott] Wootton, and [Michael] Cooper, it was my decision to leave them out.
“I am cautious of how hard we are working behind the scenes. They will be getting a bit fatigued because we have worked them hard. When we have a squad that is bigger, we can use those players.”
