Opportunity for Kyle
GOALKEEPING duties for Argyle will remain in the hands of Kyle Letheren for the visit of Oxford United on New Year’s Day.
Kyle came in for Matt Macey, who suffered a dead leg at Wimbledon on Boxing Day, and did a fine job at Burton Albion in the 1-1 draw in Sky Bet League One.
Macey is on loan at Home Park from Arsenal and there are no thoughts of him returning to his parent-club prematurely as a result of this injury, but the immediate focus is on Letheren staking his claim with another solid display against Oxford.
“He [Macey] had a collision with a Wimbledon player in the second half of the game and came off worse for wear, so he missed the [Burton] game because of that,” said Argyle boss Derek Adams.
“He’s got a dead leg and is out for Oxford. Matt Macey is here for the full season. Arsenal have a recall clause in his contract for January, we don’t have one the other way, so it would be up to Arsenal to recall him.
“Arsenal’s goalkeeping department are in constant contact with Rhys Wilmot, my goalkeeping coach. They speak frequently with the way he has been performing.
“He [Letheren] has got an opportunity now because of Matt’s injury to get some game-time. That’s what happens in football, somebody gets injured and you get the opportunity to claim that jersey.”
