It may well be money very well spent. Derek has already expressed a minimum aim of repeating last season’s exciting campaign, when the Pilgrims finished in the play-off places and ended the season one match from Wembley.

“You’ve always got targets and you always want to do well,” he said. “Argyle had a fantastic season last season, getting into the play-offs, and I think we’ve got to push to get there again.”

Derek knows all about pushing – at his previous club, Ross County, he won two titles and reached three cup finals, taking an unfashionable highland club to the very brink of European qualification. His cv positively reeks of success.

“I’m driven, I’m determined and I want to succeed,” he said.

There is no doubt the backing of the Green Army played its part in the Pilgrims’ continued resurgence last season. Who can forget the response of the players to the electric atmosphere at Home Park in the play-off game against Wycombe?

Derek knows that support will be absolutely critical at Home Park next season. He said: “Over the years, they’ve taken a lot of fans away from home, but the enthusiasm at home is beneficial, as well.”
