Plymouth Argyle U18s 1 Bournemouth 4
A young Argyle side did very well in a goalless first half against their visitors, who were superior in experience and physique, before falling apart in the second period when striker Joe Quigley scored all four of the Cherries' goals.Injuries forced Academy manager Kevin Hodges to include three of the recent Milk Cup squad in his starting line-up before introducing three more in the second half.
Although Bournemouth had plenty of first half possession they did not trouble Argyle goalkeeper Andrew Hannah until the dying minute of the half.
It was Argyle who created the better chances with Jake Miller sending in a fierce, low, drive from the edge of the area that Callum Stanton was at full stretch to turn away before Lewis Rooney was adjudged offside as he followed in.
Rooney then found himself in space, on the edge of the area, only to scuff his shot wide before his good turn in the box ended with his drive being deflected for a corner.
Jason Vincent saw his half-volley saved by Stanton before Bournemouth finally came back at their hosts.
Sam Surridge missed a good chance before Dan O'Sullivan's thunderous close range drive brought a fine reaction save out of Andrew Hannah with Jordan Bentley making a great goal-line clearance from the follow up shot.
Whatever former Argyle manager Carl Fletcher said to his side during the break certainly had the desired effect, as the Cherries emerged a far stronger outfit and, although Miller and Rooney had both gone close for Argyle, Bournemouth took a 61st minute lead.
Will Sargent fouled Henley Lander as he burst in to the area, with Quigley stepping up to convert the penalty. Ben Steer put a good chance wide for the young Pillgrims before Quigley notched his second.
The strapping striker then took on, and beat, the Argyle defence to complete his hat-trick before he was left unmarked to volley home his fourth, seven minutes from time.
Argyle's consolation goal came in the final minutes when Steer was fouled by Corey Jordan in the area. Rooney sent Stanton the wrong way from the spot-kick to get Argyle on the scoresheet.
