Match Preview

The Game
Manchester City v Argyle. Etihad Stadium. Saturday, 1 March. 5.45pm. Emirates FA Cup Round Five.

The Opposition
Manchester City are the most successful team of modern times in English football. They have won the Premier League for the last four seasons, and six times in the last seven years. They also won the Emirates FA Cup in 2019 and 2023, taking their tally to seven victories in the competition in its history. They also won the Champions League in 2023.

This season, City are having, by their standards, a disappointing season. A win on Wednesday night has propelled them into third in the Premier League table, but they remain 17 points behind leaders Liverpool. They are also out of the Champions League, having been knocked out by Real Madrid.

City were unbeaten in all competitions until 26 October, before astonishingly losing five games in a row, in the midst of a run of just one win in 13.

January saw a revival, with a run of six wins in eight, but any lingering title aspirations ended with a 5-1 defeat at Arsenal, at the start of February. It was a month that saw them also lose both legs of a Champions League tie with Real Madrid, and be beaten by Liverpool last weekend.

To get to this stage of the FA Cup, City have beaten Salford 8-0 at home, and won 2-1 at Leyton Orient.

The Gaffer
Pep Guardiola is one of the most decorated managers in football history. As a player, he spent the vast majority of his career with Barcelona, playing almost 400 times for the Catalan giants, in a holding midfield role.

He became manager of Barcelona’s B team in 2007, and a year later became the boss of the first team. In four seasons at the helm, Guardiola’s Barca won three league titles, two domestic cups, two Champions Leagues and two Club World Cups.

Pep Guardiola

He spent a year out of the game before taking over at Bayern Munich, where he spent three seasons. In this time, Bayern won the Bundesliga in all three years, won the German Cup twice and lost in the semi-finals of the Champions League every season.

Next, he headed to Manchester City, in 2016, and has won six Premier Leagues, two FA Cups, four Carabao Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

Thirty-six games short of managing 1000, Guardiola’s career win percentage is 71.68%

The Squad
It is difficult to know what sort of team Manchester City will start with on Saturday, but three notable names to have started both FA Cup games so far this season have been Ilkay Gundogan, Savinho and Jack Grealish.

Gundogan, in his second spell with City, is now 34, and has played just under 350 times for the club. He has 62 goals for City, but only two this season, both in the Champions League. Formerly of Nuremburg, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona, Gundogan won 82 caps for Germany before retiring from international football in 2024.

Savinho was a summer signing, arriving in June 2024 at the Etihad for a reported £30m, from Troyes. He has started 16 Premier League games, scoring once, and has also played regularly in the Champions League. The 20-year-old Brazilian winger impressed on loan at Girona last season and was snapped up by City. He has 11 caps for his country.

Jack Grealish

Grealish (above), whose transfer to City in 2021 makes him the most expensive English player ever, played over 200 games for Aston Villa, his first club, before making the move to the Etihad. He has 39 England caps, and has scored four goals for the Three Lions. He has started just six times in the league this season, featuring a further nine times as a sub.

Last Meetings
The last time these sides met was in the 1988/89 season, when both teams were in the second tier. City won both games, winning 1-0 at Home Park, and 2-0 at Maine Road.
