PLY Argyle Women

Jon Dawe

Argyle Women travel away from home this Sunday to face AFC Wimbledon at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, with the hopes of winning back-to-back league games for the first time this season.

After claiming an important three points at Home Park last weekend in a 2-1 victory over Lewes at Home Park, the Greens are looking to replicate the performance in the country’s capital.

The Dons sit in the middle of the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division and are the only side Argyle are yet to face in league action, with the tie having to be postponed earlier in the season.

Assistant Head Coach Jon Dawe believes the confidence and performance from the victory last time out for the Pilgrims can be a huge decider in picking up a win away from Plymouth on Sunday.

“We’re confident,” Dawe told Argyle TV, “especially after the performance on Sunday at home to Lewes. We spoke about it before the game, that the girls needed to try to generate the confidence they showed in the second half against Stoke City in the semi-final of the cup and, to be fair, I thought they demonstrated that really well. There was bravery on the ball and a lot more forward, attacking runs. It's just great to see them play with freedom and confidence.

“We stay true to our principles of play anyway and I think we just need to build on a lot of that forward-thinking play that we brought to the table on Sunday and continue to grow the confidence.

“No [injuries within the squad], touch wood. We had a session on Wednesday night and all of the squad trained and had a full complement on Thursday, so we're looking in good shape for the weekend.”

The original tie was due to be played in December at Raynes Park, but was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and continuous adverse weather. Now, the Cherry Red Records Stadium, known to many as Plough Lane, will play host to the match,

Dawe praised the work Wimbledon have done so far this season in the league, and is aware of the threat they possess and what to expect at the weekend.

He said: “It'll be a difficult game. It's the first time they've played at the stadium in 2025, I believe. They've already sold around 1,100 tickets for the game, I think, so it'll be a great occasion. They've got some real experience in the side and have really acquitted themselves well in tier three so far.

“They're a team that will come after you without the ball, so we're expecting them to put us under pressure. They carry a threat in their front three and play some good football linking through the final third. Those factors are what we're expecting to face at the weekend.”
