PNE Preston

Morgan Whittaker against Preston

sync fixtures

The Game
Argyle v Preston North End. Home Park. Saturday, 16 March. 3pm. Sky Bet Championship.

The Opposition
Preston were the early leaders in the Championship, winning six and drawing one of their opening seven fixtures. This served North End well, as they then went seven without a win, and won just five out of 21 games.

After a defeat at Sunderland on New Year's Day, Preston have fared well in 2024, losing just twice - to Leeds United, and to Stoke City last weekend - as well as drawing three and winning five in that sequence.

This leaves Preston, having played 36 games, in tenth place, five points outside the the play-offs, with a game in hand on most teams above them.

The Gaffer
Ryan Lowe became Preston's manager in December 2021, accepting the Lancashire club's offer to take over from Frankie McAvoy and, in the process, leaving Argyle.

Ryan Lowe

Lowe had taken over at Home Park in the summer of 2019, after Argyle's relegation to Sky Bet League Two. He immediately steered the Greens back to the third tier, then to an 18th-placed finish the following season.

As a player, Lowe played for the likes of Shrewsbury Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Tranmere Rovers, as well as having several stints with Crewe Alexandra and Bury. It was the latter with whom he finished his playing days, and became the Shakers' manager. He took them to promotion at the first attempt, before joining Argyle.

The Squad
Leading goalscorer Will Keane has 12 goals for Preston this season, all in the league. Stockport-born Will has seven caps for Ireland; his twin brother Michael has played 12 times for England. Will has represented, most recently, Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic, moving to Preston last summer, having had a loan spell at Deepdale in 2015.

Defender Liam Lindsay (below) is the only ever-present in the Preston side this season. The 28-year-old Glaswegian played for Barnsley and Stoke City, and had a loan at Preston in 2021. He impressed enough to make the switch permanent in that summer and, although he only made 17 appearances in his first season, has established himself in the side since.

Liam Lindsay

Danish forward Emil Riis Jakobson spent a year out with injury, returning in December, and playing 12 games this season, starting nine of them. In February, he scored in four consecutive games, and typically forms a front two for PNE, along with Keane.

Earlier This Season
Argyle lost 2-1 at Preston earlier in the season, but that scoreline does not tell the full story of the game. Duane Holmes put Preston in the lead in the first minute of the game, and Liam Millar doubled the home side's lead, but Argyle took the game to PNE, and after Ryan Hardie got one back near the hour mark, it was all Argyle in search of an equaliser, at least. However, it did not come, and Preston won 2-1.

Argyle v Preston

Argyle 0

Preston North End 1
Millar 43

Argyle fell short of delivering a much-needed three points on Armed Services Day at Home Park, as Ryan Lowe’s Preston North End snatched a narrow win.

The first period was a disjointed affair with the former Argyle manager forced to shuffle his pack with two early substitutions, and one of those replacements, Liam Millar, grabbed the only goal two minutes before the break.

The Pilgrims battled gamely after the interval but were unable to find the answer to the Preston problem and will use the international break to regroup ahead of the final push of a long season.

Argyle Head Coach Ian Foster made two changes from the side that drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers seven days ago, Joe Edwards and Adam Randell replacing Adam Forshaw and the suspended Bali Mumba.

Preston suffered a surprise 2-1 loss at home to Stoke City last weekend and were under pressure inside the opening minute at Home Park, Ryan Hardie lurking for a loose ball in the box before the visitors hacked clear.

Mickel Miller burst down the left for the next foray in a frenetic start, releasing Hardie for an attempted chip of goalkeeper Freddie Woodman that was only a fraction off radar. Preston were then forced into an early change, Millar replacing the injured Milutin Osmajic.

PNE welcomed Michael Cooper to the game with a back-post header from Jordan Storey comfortably held by the Argyle custodian. Preston were forced into a second substitution inside 20 minutes, Brad Potts replaced by Layton Stewart.

Despite the disruption, PNE conjured their best opening with a clever pass from Mads Frokjaer-Jensen and the Greens were very grateful to Millar for nudging the ball wide from a glorious position.

Argyle replied with an ambitious left-foot volley from Edwards that was no problem for Woodman, as the game descended into a midfield tussle. Just as the Pilgrims looked set for a half-time reset, Preston grabbed the lead, Millar gobbling up the chance after a Liam Lindsay cross had been deflected into his path.

Eight minutes of stoppage time gave Argyle a lift and they nearly delivered an equaliser, Morgan Whittaker’s 20-yarde2 deflecting wide before Mustapha Bundu nodded past the post from a corner.

The lively Millar posed the first problem of the second period, squeezing a shot on goal after breaking from the right but Cooper did well to hold on to the effort. Argyle’s Miller was then withdrawn for Lino Sousa.

The Greens were full of effort and endeavour but Preston were set up in a compact and disciplined unit. Sousa did threaten to unlock the door with decent cross from the left and Whittaker spun on to the loose ball for a shot dragged narrowly wide.

Alfie Devine replaced Julio Pleguezuelo on the hour, as Foster switched to a back four, but PNE held firm, despite the roaring support from the Green Army, and Millar also continued to look the major threat for the visitors.

The other Preston substitute, Stewart, rattled the post from a quick throw before Randell fizzed a drive inches wide from the edge of the box. It was the final act for the homegrown midfielder, as he was replaced by Ben Waine.

Unfortunately, there was no answer for Argyle and Preston took the points.
