Ryan Lowe Takes Team to Boxing Gym
THE Argyle first-team swapped their boots for gloves, footballs for medicine balls, and turf for canvas as part of their varied and pre-season preparation.
Ryan Lowe’s squad were put through their paces at Legends Boxing Gym in Plymstock, where owner Darren Townley was only too happy to have the boys in for some training drills under the instruction of Argyle Head of Fitness and Conditioning, John Lucas.
“It was a real honour for me to have Ryan and his team down here,” said Darren, who is a current professional boxer. “He wanted like me to put them through pretty strong training, so they [the staff] are definitely pushing the boys hard this year.
"They were real gentleman, really nice guys, but it was a tough session."
The Legends Gym was founded by Darren in 2018 and, with the help of friend Ben Morrish, an ex-professional boxer and now elite marathon runner, he has seen the facility go from strength to strength.
Darren said: “When I opened, I said that I would welcome people in, and Ryan got in touch with me. I’m not sure if it was planned, but he spoke about taking his other teams to a boxing gym in Liverpool.
"For me, having people like the Argyle team down here can only be a good thing. Although I do a lot of work myself, Ben has helped me, he does elite marathon runs in double-quick times!
“My gym has really helped people - it gets them off the streets and gives them a focus to train. It all started when I was given a unit a few years ago and it took off from there, so it has done really well."
